Betty rolled her eyes - both at Cindy and at herself. Why had she let that slip out? Honestly, sometimes Betty could hit herself for being so...so...so stupid! Now she'd just have to fix this. Thinking quickly, she came up with a suitable response.
"Oh no," She said soothingly, "I didn't mean anything bad by it! Goodness - I bet that came out just horrible, didn't it? I was really just trying to get Jimmy to admit his feelings for you - oh, I've known he's liked you since...well, forever - and I figured that..." She paused her, realizing her "plan" didn't seem to make much sense spoken aloud, "Well, the details aren't important, what's important is...I was right. And you and Jimmy are together."
She paused again, "Well, I really don't know about that last part - you really aren't saying much on that subject. Ah, but," She shook her head, and with a wave of the hand dismissed the subject, "that's not the point. The point is I had your best interests in mind."
She smiled at Cindy and stood up, as if this settled the matter, and inwardly prayed to God that the other girl would not ask for details on this far-fetched "plan" of hers. "You see, Cindy," She said, "That's the type of thing friends do for each other."
